SOD Superoxide Dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1) is an enzyme that can alternately catalyze the disproportionation (or distribution) of superoxide (O₂) radicals into ordinary molecular oxygen (O₂) or hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Superoxide is a by - product of oxygen metabolism. If not controlled, it can cause various types of cell damage. Hydrogen peroxide is also destructive and is broken down by other enzymes (such as catalase). Therefore, SOD is an important antioxidant in almost all living cells exposed to oxygen. Lactobacillus plantarum and related Lactobacillus are exceptions, which have different mechanisms to prevent damage caused by reactive (O₂).
